Folio Template — Complete Guide

Folio is a typographic, modern-editorial invitation template inspired by Swiss poster design and editorial portfolio sites. Where Linen is a quiet cream-paper magazine spread and Atelier is letterpress stationery, Folio is a poster: your date set in giant serif numerals, every section numbered like a chapter in a catalogue, hairline rules, a faint visible grid and exactly one hot accent colour.

This guide covers how Folio looks, the options unique to it, how to apply it to your event, and how it lays out each section of your invitation.

What makes Folio different

Standard templates change colours and fonts over the same shared layout. Folio replaces the layout itself: its own cover, its own chapter structure, and a hand-made treatment for each section.

Signature design elements

Poster-scale date numerals — the cover opens with your date as giant serif numerals ("20 · 06 · 27"), separated by small squares in the accent colour. The order follows your date format (day first, month first or year first), and the numerals always show the day you picked, wherever your guests are.
Numbered chapters — every section is a chapter with its number and title: "(01) A note", "(02) Counting down", "(03) Selected moments". Numbers follow the order sections actually appear on the page, so hiding or reordering a section renumbers everything automatically.
A sticky index column — on wide screens each chapter's number and title sit in a column on the left (on the right for right-to-left languages) and stay in view while its content scrolls beside them. Phones stack the title above the content.
A visible grid — faint vertical column rules run down the page on wide screens, and every row, photo and label snaps to them.
Figure captions — photos carry editorial captions ("Fig. 01", "Fig. 02") numbered across the whole page: the cover photo, the story photos and the gallery.
One accent colour — vermilion by default, used sparingly: date separators, arrows, chapter numbers, the reply button.
Text links instead of buttons — actions are underlined words with an arrow. On hover the underline slides into the accent colour and the arrow nudges forward.
Three typefaces, three jobs — Instrument Serif for display (numerals, titles, the italic event name), Inter for reading, IBM Plex Mono for the small labels in parentheses.

When to choose Folio

Folio suits hosts who like their invitation designed rather than decorated:

Modern and city weddings — for couples who would rather have great typography than florals
Engagement parties — confident and graphic without being formal
Art-minded hosts — gallery openings, studio parties, book launches, exhibition dinners
Design-led corporate dinners — agency anniversaries, product launch dinners, press evenings
Milestone birthdays for grown-ups — a 40th or 50th that should feel like an event, not a kids' party

If you want something softer and more romantic, try Vesper. For quiet black-and-white photography, try Linen. For a dark, glowing party look, try Aurora.

Applying Folio to your event

Open your event, click Invitation in the sidebar, then the Invitation tab
In Design Template, click Change template if the gallery is collapsed, and find Folio
Optional: press Try it on to see Folio with your own invitation details in the live preview — nothing is saved until you press Use this design
Or click the Folio card to apply it straight away
Open Folio options to adjust the template-specific settings described below. Changes save automatically

Folio works on every plan. On free events a small "Made with Fotify" badge appears in the bottom corner of the invitation; any paid plan or an active subscription removes it.

Switching to another template later is non-destructive: your event content stays exactly as you entered it, and your Folio options are kept in case you switch back.

Folio options

Folio has seven options of its own, on top of the standard colour and font controls.

1. Accent colour

The single hot colour of the page. It marks the date separators, arrows, chapter numbers, underlines on hover and the reply button.

Vermilion (default) — a warm red-orange, the classic Swiss poster accent
Cobalt — a deep blue
Forest — a dark green
Ink (no colour) — fully monochrome; the accent becomes the text colour

2. Paper

The page colour.

Bone (default) — a warm off-white
White — crisp gallery white
Sand — warmer and softer
Noir — the whole invitation turns dark, with light type. Accent colours are brightened automatically so they stay readable

3. Numbering

How chapters, story entries and figure captions are numbered.

(01) Parenthesis (default) — small mono numbers in parentheses
I. Roman numerals — larger serif numerals: I., II., III.
No numbers — chapters keep their titles, and figure captions are hidden, for a cleaner page

4. Side index column (desktop)

On by default: on wide screens each chapter's number and title sit in a sticky column beside the content. Turn it off to set chapter titles across the top of each section instead, at a larger size, with the content running the full width below. Phones always stack titles above the content.

5. Grid lines (desktop)

On by default: faint vertical column rules in the background on wide screens — the layout grid made visible. Turn it off for a plain page.

6. Cover line

The small line at the very top of the cover, next to the accent square — for example "Together with their families" or "Studio Nine turns ten". Leave it blank to use the default ("You are invited").

7. Closing title

The large serif line that closes the invitation. Leave it blank to use the default ("See you there."). Try "Until June.", "Come as you are." or "Dress up."

Every piece of text Folio prints on the invitation — chapter titles, the "(Date)" style labels, the reply link, "Fig." and the closing title — can also be rewritten directly on the page: switch the live preview into edit mode and double-click the text. Section titles you have already set in their own settings (story, countdown, gifts, where to stay, getting there, FAQs) are edited in place the same way.

How each section is treated

Cover

The cover replaces the standard header:

Top line — the cover line (option 6) beside a small accent square, over a full-width rule
Date numerals — your event date as giant serif numerals, sized to fill the column
Event name — in large italic serif
Cover photo — a tall portrait image hung slightly lower than the numerals, with a "Fig. 01" caption. Without a cover photo the numerals and name simply take the full width
Facts row — up to four columns with small labels in parentheses: (Date) with the weekday, (Time) when the time is shown on the cover, (Place) and (Reply by) when you have set an RSVP deadline
Reply link — "Reply to the invitation →", which jumps to the RSVP chapter

The time follows the Show time setting of your invitation's cover.

Message

Your invitation message becomes the first chapter. When the first paragraph is short enough it is set as a large serif opening line; the rest is set in Inter for easy reading.

Countdown

Large serif numerals for days, hours, minutes and (optionally) seconds, each over a small mono label, separated by hairline rules. When the countdown ends, your completion message is shown in large serif instead.

Gallery (Carousel)

An editorial image sequence rather than a slider. On wide screens photos alternate between wide and narrow frames on the grid, the narrow ones hanging slightly lower; a final single photo closes the sequence as a panorama. On phones the photos become a horizontal strip you swipe through, snapping photo by photo. Every photo has a numbered "Fig." caption.

Story

A numbered list of entries. Each milestone gets its number, the year in large serif, the full date in small mono, then its title, description and photo (with a figure caption). Every milestone is laid out the same way. Your story subtitle appears under the chapter title.

Location

The map inside a hairline frame, then an address block laid out like a colophon: (Address) in serif and (Directions) beside it, plus an Open in Maps ↗ link. If the location has no map, the address block stands on its own.

Itinerary

A timetable. Each day opens with its date; each entry is one hairline-ruled row with the time in serif, the event, then the place and any note.

Gifts

A clean list. Your gifts message opens the chapter in serif, then each kind of gift — registries, monetary gifts, charities, wishlist — is a labelled list of rows with a Visit ↗, Copy or Reserve → link at the end. Payment details sit in a mono chip that wraps cleanly, even for long wallet addresses. Group labels only appear when you offer more than one kind of gift.

Dress code as a large italic pull-quote, with your description, suggested and avoided colour swatches, and notes
Where to stay and Getting there as rows: name on the left, details, promo codes and a Book ↗ or Details ↗ link on the right

Save the Date (Calendar)

Three large underlined links — Google Calendar ↗, Apple Calendar ↓ (downloads the calendar file) and Outlook ↗ — set as an index list.

RSVP

The reply form as a clean sheet: underline-only fields, small mono labels, the attend / decline choices as large serif options with square checkboxes, and a full-width accent send bar with an arrow that turns black on hover. Your RSVP deadline appears under the chapter title. On a save-the-date, the chapter shows the save-the-date note instead of the form.

Closing

A full-width rule, then your closing title in very large serif, and a final row with the event name, date, place and a Back to top ↑ link.

Sections without a bespoke layout

These sections use Fotify's standard layout, restyled to match Folio:

Photo upload, QR code, Table assignment, Playlist, Sub-events, Special treatments and custom sections

They are numbered in the same chapter sequence as everything else, sit directly on the page paper instead of in tinted panels, use Folio's serif headings, square corners and black buttons (the accent colour appears on hover), and on wide screens sections with a title use the same index-column layout. Seat badges in table assignment use the accent colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use Folio for a non-wedding event? A: Yes. Nothing in Folio is wedding-specific: set the cover line to your occasion ("Studio Nine turns ten", "An evening for our partners"), pick an accent and paper that fit your brand, and rewrite any chapter title in the live preview.

Q: Why did my chapter numbers change? A: Numbers always follow the order sections appear on the page. Hiding a section, reordering sections, or a section with no content (for example a story with no milestones) renumbers the rest, so there are never gaps. If you prefer no numbers at all, set Numbering to No numbers.

Q: How is the date on the cover worked out? A: From your event date and your invitation's date format. Day-first formats show "20 · 06 · 27", month-first formats "06 · 20 · 27", and the year-first format shows the full year first ("2027 · 06 · 20"). Every guest sees the day you chose, whatever their time zone.

Q: I don't have a cover photo. Will the cover look empty? A: No. Without a photo, the date numerals and the event name take the full width of the page, and the figure numbering starts with your first story or gallery photo.

Q: Does Folio work in right-to-left languages? A: Yes. In Hebrew and Arabic the whole layout mirrors: the index column moves to the right, arrows point the other way and underlines slide from the right. The date numerals keep their natural left-to-right order, as numbers do in those languages.

Q: Does Noir change my photos? A: No. Photos are always shown in their natural colours; Noir only changes the page, the type and the lines.

Q: Can I use custom RSVP fields with Folio? A: Yes. Custom fields (dropdowns, dates, checkboxes, file uploads and so on) pick up Folio's underline-only styling and mono labels automatically.
