How to Add Watermarks to Event Photos
Protect your event photos and reinforce your brand by adding automatic watermarks. When guests download or share photos from your public album, your logo or custom text is applied as a watermark. This feature is available on the Premium Event plan and is configured in the Branding Center.
Enabling Photo Watermarks
- Go to Branding Center in the sidebar
- Scroll to the "Photo Watermark" section
- Choose your watermark type: Logo/Image or Text
- Configure position, opacity, and scale
- Click Save Changes
Once enabled, watermarks are automatically applied when guests view photos in the album grid and full-size photo view, and when they download or share photos from the public album.
Logo / Image Watermark
Upload your own logo or image to use as a watermark:
- File format: PNG recommended (transparent background works best)
- Maximum file size: 5 MB
- Best practice: Use a logo with a transparent background so it overlays cleanly on any photo
To set up a logo watermark:
- Select Logo/Image as the watermark type
- Click Upload and choose your PNG file
- Adjust the position, opacity, and scale to your liking
- Preview the result and click Save Changes
A logo with a transparent background blends naturally into any photo without covering important details.
Text Watermark
Use custom text as your watermark instead of an image:
- Enter any text, such as your brand handle (e.g., @yourbrand), event name, or website URL
- The text renders as a semi-transparent overlay on the photo
To set up a text watermark:
- Select Text as the watermark type
- Enter your watermark text
- Adjust position, opacity, and scale
- Preview and click Save Changes
Text watermarks are a great option if you do not have a logo file ready or want a simple, clean branding approach.
Adjusting Position, Opacity, and Scale
Fine-tune how your watermark appears on photos:
Position
Choose where the watermark sits on each photo:
- Bottom-right (default) - Most common placement, unobtrusive
- Bottom-left - Alternative corner placement
- Top-right - Visible immediately when viewing
- Top-left - Good for logos that complement the top of the frame
- Center - Maximum protection, covers the main subject area
Opacity
Use the opacity slider to control watermark transparency:
- Range: 10% to 100%
- Lower values (10-30%) create a subtle, professional look
- Higher values (70-100%) provide stronger protection but are more prominent
Scale
Use the scale slider to control watermark size relative to the photo width:
- Range: 5% to 50% of the photo width
- Smaller values (5-15%) are discreet and professional
- Larger values (30-50%) provide more prominent branding
How Watermarks Adapt to Photo Orientation
The watermark automatically adapts to both landscape and portrait photos. It maintains the same relative size and position regardless of orientation, so your branding looks consistent whether a guest took a wide shot or a vertical portrait.
You do not need to configure anything separately for different orientations. The scale percentage is always relative to the photo width, ensuring the watermark never looks oversized on a narrow portrait or undersized on a wide landscape.
Custom Share Text
In addition to watermarks, you can set a Custom Share Text that pre-fills when guests share photos from the public album. This message appears when guests use the share buttons for WhatsApp, Twitter, or email.
To set up custom share text:
- Go to Branding Center
- Find the Custom Share Text field
- Enter your message (e.g., "Check out photos from Sarah & Tom's wedding! #SmithWedding2026")
- Click Save Changes
When a guest taps the share button, your custom text is pre-filled in the sharing dialog, making it easy for them to spread the word with your preferred message and hashtags.
This works alongside watermarks to give you full control over how your event photos are presented when shared online. For more album customization options, see How to Customize Your Album.
Tips for Effective Watermarks
- Use a transparent PNG for logo watermarks to avoid a white box behind your logo
- Keep opacity between 20-40% for a professional look that protects without distracting
- Bottom-right placement is the industry standard and least intrusive position
- Test with different photo types - preview your watermark on both light and dark images to ensure visibility
- Combine with custom share text for maximum brand exposure when guests share your event photos
- Match your event branding - use the same logo and colors you set up in the Branding Center
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which plans include the photo watermark feature? A: Photo watermarks are available exclusively on the Premium Event plan. You can upgrade your event plan at any time from the dashboard.
Q: Does the watermark affect my original photos? A: No. Watermarks are applied client-side as an overlay. Your original photos stored on Fotify remain completely untouched and watermark-free.
Q: Does the organizer's bulk download include watermarks? A: No. When you download photos from the organizer dashboard (bulk download), you always receive the original, unwatermarked files. Watermarks are only applied when guests download or share from the public album.
Q: How does the watermark work with landscape and portrait photos? A: The watermark automatically adapts to both orientations. The scale is based on a percentage of the photo width, so the watermark maintains the same relative size and position whether the photo is landscape or portrait.
Q: Can I use both a text and logo watermark at the same time? A: No, you choose one watermark type per event - either a logo/image watermark or a text watermark. You can switch between them at any time.
Q: Does the watermark work on videos? A: No, watermarks are currently applied to photos only. Videos uploaded to your event are not watermarked.
Q: Can I change the watermark after the event has started? A: Yes, you can update your watermark settings at any time from the Branding Center. Changes take effect immediately for all future downloads and shares. Photos that guests have already downloaded will keep the previous watermark.
Q: What is the Custom Share Text feature? A: Custom Share Text lets you set a pre-filled message that appears when guests share photos via WhatsApp, Twitter, or email. It is separate from watermarks and works alongside them to control how your event photos are presented when shared.
Q: Will the watermark show in the album grid and photo viewer? A: Yes, watermarks appear as a visual overlay in both the album grid view and the full-size photo view, so guests see your branding while browsing. The same watermark is applied when they download or share a photo.
